Frequently Asked Questions
What is Playful Pedagogy?
Playful Pedagogy is An approach to teaching that blends evidence-based educational practices and meaningful engagement with joy, curiosity, creativity and fun – making learning accessible, comprehensible, and memorable for students. Instead of being just about games for fun—it’s about designing learning experiences where students feel motivated, capable, and safe to explore.
- Playful → Using creativity, games, interaction, or enjoyable activities to enhance engagement
- Pedagogy → Rooted in research-backed teaching methods, structured learning objectives, and intentional outcomes
- Engagement Through Fun: Use games, storytelling, role-play, or humor to make concepts stick
- Comprehensible Learning: Simplify complex ideas, scaffold knowledge, and use clear explanations
- Active Participation: Students learn by doing, collaborating, experimenting, and reflecting
- Creativity + Flexibility: Teachers adapt lessons to student interests and explore multiple pathways to understanding
- Evidence-Based Practice: Play is intentional, not random — activities are designed to meet learning goals
A playful pedagogy integrates play into learning. It’s more than recess or games—it’s about using curiosity, creativity, and experimentation as a central part of teaching and learning across subjects and age groups.
How can learning happen if you are playing all the time??
Play is our most natural form of learning.
Playful learning can coexist with academic goals. Structured activities, challenges, and open-ended exploration can all connect to curriculum objectives while keeping learning joyful and engaging.
Play is an important component in learning, however what is playful for one may not be playful for others. There is a balance to be found.
Is my classroom all fun and games all the time? No (although that would be awesome). There are moments of quiet contemplation, think time and silent independant work. There is assessment and evaluation (although these can be playful, too). There are ebbs and flows.
Sometimes the classroom is loud, messy and chaotic; sometimes it is quiet, calm and ordered. It is always about learning and often involving play.
